Best School Counties

Counties with the highest education scores — based on graduation rates, per-pupil spending, and attainment.

School quality is the number one factor families consider when choosing where to live, and our education score quantifies it using NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) and Census ACS data. We evaluate counties on high school graduation rates, per-pupil spending, educational attainment levels (percentage of adults with bachelor's degrees or higher), and student-to-teacher ratios where available. Top-ranking counties tend to be affluent suburbs with strong property tax bases that fund well-resourced schools. States with traditions of local educational excellence — Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Virginia — dominate the upper tiers. However, per-pupil spending alone doesn't determine quality; some high-spending urban counties have lower graduation rates due to concentrated poverty and other systemic challenges. Our score balances inputs (spending) with outcomes (graduation, attainment) to identify counties where the education system truly delivers results for students.

Based on NCES and Census ACS education data.
